We congratulate the third graduating cohort of the Malawi Digital Inclusion Program! The graduation ceremony for this class of 60 students, made up of refugees from the DRC, Rwanda, Burundi and Malawian youth, took place on August 16th, 2022 at the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Center in Malawi’s Dzaleka camp. This cohort has completed over 100 hours of digital freelance training and practice since January 2022. Now, graduates are equipped not only with in-demand digital skills, but also the soft skills required for long-term employment success. It has been an amazing 6 months in Malawi of digital skills training, as our third cohort of students approach the tail end of Konexio’s Digital Inclusion Program (DIP). Having begun their training in January, a total of 60 Malawian youth and refugees from the DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi in Dzaleka camp will graduate on the 16th of August following the completion of their final assessments. It’s official! Konexio is pleased to announce the successful launch of its training of trainers program with our longstanding partner, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS). Now in the Middle East, Konexio is excited to extend our Digital Inclusion Program (DIP) to those in need in Amman, training refugee and Jordanian youth in digital skills and online freelancing. JRS trainers, Dima, Noor, and Dania will participate in Konexio’s intensive ToT course from July through mid September in preparation for our first student cohort launch at the end of September.
Students in Konexio’s Malawi program have completed their skills training and are moving into the practical part of the course, while engagement continues through workshops for our alumni students from previous cohorts. The current group of students are actively earning income during freelancing, and have all successfully registered on at least one platform, overcoming a major hurdle for refugees, who lack easily-recognized identification. Their next big challenge is to land clients. So far, some have been successful, finding a niche in translation and AI data annotation. We have officially launched a new cohort of 60 students in Nairobi, in partnership with RefuSHE! The students started their training on June 6th, and will graduate in early December. The Digital Inclusion Program Nairobi (DIP) will equip these young refugee women with employable skills to take up digital and digitally enabled jobs in the growing digital economy.
Konexio made its long awaited visit to Nairobi, Kenya to meet the local partners and officially launch its digital skills and online freelancing training program in partnership with RefuSHE. The week-long visit played a critical role in fulfilling our mission to promote digital inclusion and allow those who cannot access opportunities due to lack of digital skills to find a pathway to self-reliance and economic resilience. What is your background? From a very young age, I lived between two countries: Italy and Senegal, which allowed me to become trilingual very quickly: Wolof, French and Italian. I have lived in Italy since I was a teenager. Then my children grew up and we decided to come to France to allow them to follow an ambitious school curriculum. What profession would you like to focus on now? For 2 years I was enrolled in a RATP training course to become a bus driver. My favorite job. I have been driving large vehicles for a long time, and I must say that I am quite good at driving. However, because of the Covid crisis, I have not been able to finish this training. Konexio moderates a panel on cross-sectoral collaboration, with representatives from RefugePoint, Ikea Foundation, and US PRMKonexio is delighted to have participated in this year’s Migration Summit, organized by the MIT Refugee Action Hub (ReACT), a month-long global event designed to build bridges between diverse communities of displaced learners, academia, private sector, government, and philanthropy around the key challenges and opportunities for refugee and migrant communities. |
